A Conducive Environment
At our city campus, in Temasek Tower and International Plaza, the students find themselves in a vibrant and cosmopolitan environment in which to learn and observe the best practices of household names in the business world. Transport and recreational amenities are in abundance and adds to the ease of integration, especially for foreigners. For local working students, the convenience of the central location means they can easily attend classes after work. The SOTH believes in a holistic learning environment that looks after the well-being of the student in totality. Hence, a range of activities and extra curricula like field trips, site-visits and sports activities are arranged regularly. Sports and excursions are organized weekly to acclimatize the international students to the local scene. This adds value when they in turn become our tourism ambassadors. Annual Award Ceremonies are also organized to recognize the hard work that the students have gone through after their industrial attachment. Outstanding graduates are presented awards, and an opportunity for them to mingle, share and remain a part of the Nanyang family. Counseling and pastoral care are also provided where foreign students can meet up with the Head of School or a student counselor who is able to speak their language. During their industrial attachment, an attachment officer will continue to monitor and give support to the student, to brief and update him on activities at the school.
Industry-relevant syllabus
Each subject in the programme is meticulously adjusted to suit the needs of the industry, to enable ours students to learn relevant useful solutions to current operational issues. This, we do in consultation with our hospitality partners, whom we visit regularly to obtain feedback, as well as inviting them for presentation and seminars for our students. The focus of our subjects must address real-life issues that matter for the success of our students in the choice of their careers, as well as practical use for our industry partners. The school is equipped with mock-up facilities like a restaurant, a front office and a bedroom suite for real-life learning. For the Casino Management students, we have a full-fledged casino training facility in partnership with International Club Games Training Center. The school is also equipped with a large computer laboratory for the learning of the operational systems of Fidelio, and Amadeus for the hotel and travel industry.
Industry-trained specialist teachers
The SOTH specially pre-selects teachers based on academic qualifications and industry experience. The lecturers must have a minimum of a degree or masters. However, our emphasis remains in the relevant industry experience they bring along with them. Our senior lecturers have more than 20 years industry experience each and are assigned to design and develop syllabus which are industry relevant. This capability has allowed our students to be accepted as trainees by world’s best known hotels.
At the end of the day, a good diploma should lead to a good job. This premium that the SOTH has for placement in the best hospitality establishment, has also allowed our students to get full-time jobs after the completion of their attachment. Our diplomas get the due recognition that it is on par with any tertiary qualifications, when our students are awarded an S-Pass to stay and work in Singapore upon completion of their studies with Nanyang’s School of Tourism and Hospitality.
