Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
Be equipped with conceptualised knowledge on child development and early childhood education.
Be skilful and competent in using various observational strategies and interpret data
Design and plan a stimulating, conducive learning environment by using a variety of environmental resources and materials 
Plan, implement and evaluate age-appropriate curriculum
Be aware of their roles as an early childhood practitioner and what it means to be a reflective practitioner.

Course Structure

This course comprises 900 hours of theory and 300 hours of supervised teaching practice. The duration of the course is 18 months full-time or 30 months part-time.

The maximum allowed period for a student to complete this course is 3 years which takes effect from the commencement date of the course. Students who fail to complete the course within the stipulated period will not be entitled to any recourse or refund. For refund, please refer to the ‘Student’s Contract’. 
The teacher-student ratio is 1:30.

Mode of Delivery 

Students in their learning will go through different modes of instruction. These include classroom lectures using powerpoint slides, lecture handouts, group discussions and presentations, individual reflections, role play, workshops, group and individual tutorials, field trips and the use of information communication technologies.

Academic Calendar

NIM shall notify the student within three (3) working days upon knowledge of any of the following:

i.It does not commence the Course on the Course Commencement Date; or
ii.It terminates the Course before the Course Commencement Date.

NIM shall inform the student in writing of alternative study arrangements (if any).
NIM shall refund student according to the Refund Policy in the Standard PEI-Student Contract.
The waiting period for the commencement of course is 2 to 4 months depending on the course applied for.

Entry Requirements

• GCE 'O' level credits in 5 different subjects, including at least C6 in GCE ‘O’ MT; or
 Foreign qualification in Chinese, completed 10 years of formal education in Chinese Language (CL) and passed state exam in 5 different subjects including acceptable equivalent C6 in GCE ‘O’ level CL

Assessment & Awards

The assessment comprises of coursework and written examination. The coursework may include written essay, reflective journals, report writing, compilation of resource file, case study, practical assignments, presentation and group projects etc.

Upon successful completion of all modules, the student will be awarded the Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education – Teaching/Chinese (DECCE-TC) by Nanyang Institute of Management. 

Practicum Facilitation

This course comprises of a practicum component that entails students’ attachment to a host centre for their     teaching practice and supervision visits by a practicum supervisor. Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM) will facilitate in the arrangement and process of students’ attachment.
